M L K D A Y O F V O L U N T E E R S E R V I C E
B E A C H C L E A N – U P!
WHEN: January 16, 2016, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM.
WHERE: Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, 1100 Seabreeze Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316. Metered parking available.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: You can help clean-up the beach by picking up small pieces of plastic and other bio-degradable debris. Left on the beach, the debris pollutes the ocean and can injure coral reefs, small fish and other marine life. Volunteers will have the opportunity to use the plastic to create a beautiful work of art that same morning! Students receive community service credit.
WHAT WE CAN DO: Kids Ecology Corps will provide pickers and pails for the clean-up. KEC’s Eco Art Director Susie Q Wood and Marine Biologist Christa Jewett will talk about why it’s important to preserve and protect our local coral reefs, marine life and “Save One Little Fish at a Time.” With the help of Susie, the KEC Team and Community Partners, volunteers will use the repurposed plastic to create an amazing community work of art right on the beach!
Kids Ecology Corps and Partners, Lindsey Nieratka and Susan Smith, Broward College educators, City of Fort Lauderdale Neighbor Volunteer Office, Chief Service Officer, Jorg Hruschka, Sherry Bynes, FAU Educator and Hands on Broward, MLK Team are the proud recipients of a 2016 Broward College Grant to honor the life and work Martin Luther King, Jr. This Grant provides a volunteer service learning opportunity for children and their families, students and community members from all walks of life to join together in service to help “Save One Little Fish at a Time.”
In the spirit of honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this collaborative community art project was created to help “Save One Little Fish at a Time.” Susie will have an exhibition of her Eco Art in April at Fort Lauderdale City Hall. Be sure to come by to see the artwork volunteers created.
The National Martin Luther King Day of Service was created in 1994 through federal legislation to honor Dr. King’s legacy and uplift the community, as he would have, with a “Day On” of service, not a “Day Off.”

Invasive Plant Removal at Snyder Park
Air Potatoes are taking over the trees and shrubs at Snyder Park and The Kids Ecology Corps needs your help to remove them!
Air Potatoes and other invasive plants need to be removed because they are not allowing native plants the space and light they need to grow. Once these plants are gone, the park will be a better place for native trees and plants to flourish, and migrating birds, butterflies and other wildlife to thrive.
This project will include a nature walk to explain the importance of native plants to the South Florida habitat. Once the project is complete, you can stay to visit the Butterfly Garden or the Disc Golf course at the park.
Due to the outdoor activity, it is recommended all volunteers wear a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent, plus bring their own water and snack. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants are highly recommended. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work/garden gloves if they don’t want to use a used pair.
